A comprehensive study of the vibrationally resolved S 2p â1 Auger electron spectrum of carbonyl sulfide
High-resolution normal Auger-electron spectra of carbonyl sulfide subsequent
to S 2p â1 photoionization at photonenergies of 200, 220, and 240 eV are
reported along with corresponding photoelectron spectra. In addition,
theoretical results are presented that take the core-hole orientation of the
various spin-orbit-split and molecular-field-split S 2p â1 states into
account. Auger transitions to eight metastable dicationic final states are
observed and assigned on the basis of the theoretical results. From Franck-
Condon analysis, assuming Morse potentials along the normal coordinates for
seven of the observed quasi-stable dicationic final states, information on the
potential-energysurfaces is derived and compared with theoretical results from
the literature

Summary 99 A Curve fitting 103 B Calculation of L matrix 107 Bibliography 113In the present work high-resolution normal Auger-electron spectra of the NO
molecule subsequent to O 1sâ1 and N 1sâ1 photoionizations, the CO2 molecule
subsequent to C 1sâ1 photoionization, and the OCS molecule subsequent to S
2pâ1 photoionization are reported. In addition, corresponding photoelectron
spectra were studied. All spectra exhibit vibrational structures indicating
stable or metastable electronic states. The main goal of the present study was
to derive from the vibrational progressions in the Auger spectra information
on the potential-energy curves of metastable dicationic states of the
respective molecules. To this end, Franck-Condon analyses of the vibrational
progressions were performed assuming Morse potentials along the normal
coordinate of each observed vibrational mode. For the NO molecule, transitions
to five metastable dicationic states were ob-served, with two of them
previously unobservable. The present experimental results agree well with
calculations of the potential-energy curves of NO2+ that allows to assign two
hitherto unresolved Auger transitions to N 1sâ1 â C2ÎŁ+ and N 1sâ1 â c4Î . The
photoelectron spectra were analyzed by considering not only the interaction of
the spin moments of the 1s electrons and the 2Ï electron of the core-ionized
states but also a spin-orbit splitting of the ground state X2Î of 15.015 meV;
this resulted in more reliable values for the lifetime broadening. In the
Auger spectrum of the CO2 molecule, transitions to seven metastable states
were observed. They all show contributions of the symmetric stretching
vibrational mode and are assigned on the basis of theoretical results in
combination with the assumption that the Auger spectrum is dominated by
transitions to singlet states. For the OCS molecule, Auger transitions to
eight metastable states were observed and assigned mainly by relating the fit
results to calculations. For seven of the observed metastable dicationic
states, assuming Morse potentials along the normal coordinates corresponding
to the CâO and the CâS stretching vibrational modes, information on the
potential-energy surfaces was derived. The photoelectron spectra of the OCS
molecule were analyzed by taking into account spin-orbit and molecular-field
splittings of the core-ionized state; this allowed to derive for the first
time the geometry of the S 2pâ1 core-ionized state.
